In the light of the coronavirus crisis and the cancellation or indefinite postponement of the ACT and SAT exams, more and more universities and colleges nationwide are waiving the test requirements. This week, MIT made an announcement that will very likely have a large ripple effect and cause a major blow to the ACT/SAT utility.

Starting this fall, MIT will no longer require SAT subject tests such as Math 1-2, Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, in its admissions. "We found that fewer schools have been requiring the tests, fewer students have been taking them, and as such they had become both somewhat less predictive for us and more exclusive," explains the Dean of Admissions, Stu Schmill. "Our research showed that the other components of the application are sufficient to establish academic preparation."

MIT admissions will not consider the subject tests, even if an applicant has already taken them.
